Week 13 – Reflection

What have I learned in this class?

At first, from this class, I learned use philosophical thinking to consider some problems. For example, when I know what ontology and epistemology are, I learned these two theories are unified, which means ontology determines epistemology, epistemology reflects the corresponding ontology. What kind of ontology you have what kind of epistemology you will get. When we do something, our thinking will affect our behaviors. Moreover, I also learned many research methods, such as secondary research, which is one of the most useful methods for investigation. The most impressed method in my mind is exploratory research because I do a presentation about this method in the class.  Observational research and experimental research are also used in my other courses’ report, which is a great of importance as well. Then, according to the assignment2, and some class practice. I learned how to find academic essays, and diverse angles to review this article. For example, think about whether this article is credible or why this article is reasonable. Additionally, according to this class, I am more confident about what topic in my Project. I ensured what I interested in the IT areas — VR. Lastly, I learned some ethical behaviors. And there are four points which people could to estimate, I really agree with it. 1. we should think about the social effect/values more than law. 2. Health and property protected. 3. Respect to each other, equal human being. 4. Evaluating what bad aspects would happen. According to these ways, we can determine whether the behaviors are ethical or unethical

What do I like about this course? (or don’t like)

Obviously, RES701 is pretty helpful for my next item’s courses. It will let me think about want I interested in in IT fields. In addition, this course environment is enjoyable and accessible. That’s the reason why I love this course. This course’s tutor is a patient and nice guy, which is also the reason I like this class.

I do not have any suggests in this class, probably tutor could remember all students names? LOL But I know, this situation is different.  😊

Week 12 Ethical Behaviour

  • About social values not laws
  • Treat others as you would wish to be treated
  • Evaluating how things affect others – particularly negatively
  • Respectful treatment – treated as an equal (human) being
  • Privacy protected/safe environment
  • Health and well being (and property) protected
  • You find some good images on the web that would look good on your site.  You copy and paste them to your blog.

This behaviour related to ethical. Because the information from the website is not yours, it is from other writers, with means if people want to use these images need to inform the author and obtain the agreement

  • You are in a hurry to finish an assignment and you find the perfect explanation of a difficult concept on wikipedia. You decide to copy it into your work.

Undoubtedly, this behavior is unethical, and if you try to use some information from other people, you should put reference, and clearly to show where this information comes from. As far as I am concerned, the right behavior is to use your own words to paraphrase the sentences.

  • You are a medical researcher and you think you have discovered a new drug that cures lung cancer.  It worked well on mice although a few of them died of heart problems. You want to test it on people.  You recruit 100 lung cancer patients into your treatment programme. You don’t tell them about the new drug.  You treat 50 patients with usual drugs and 50 with the new drug to see which is better.

This behaviour is unethically, first of all, the drug is not 100% safe. Some experimental mice die from this drug, which means that people may die. Secondly, the people involved in the experiment have the right to know the experimental content, which they have the right to know. And their health is not guaranteed. Therefore, this behavior is unethical.

  • You are doing your PhD about drug abuse among students.  You interview 30 students about their drug use. You discover that one of the students is actually a fairly behavior dealer and you report him to the police.

It is a good behaviour. Firstly, from the perspective of safety and social stability.  Drugs do great harm to people, not only to individuals, but also to those around them. For the sake of social stability and the health of others, there is no doubt that it is a good thing to report the dealer to the police.

  • You are a researcher looking at the effect of violent computer games on children.  You recruit 20 children into your study. Over a month you regularly show them images of violence to see if it has an adverse effect on their behaviour.  One of the children becomes quite distressed each time and so you stop showing her images and drop her from the study.

The behaviour of show images of violence to children is unethically due to children are still in the growth stage, which is easily disturbed by the outside world, so too much premature contact violence will have an impact on their future development. But for distressed children, the researchers stop this child to continue the experiment, which is the right behaviour.

  • You want to research how easy it is to hack into your organisation’s computer system by persuading people to divulge login and password details.  You recruit a small team to ring up key people in the organisation and persuade them to give either their own or their boss’s details.

This behaviour is unethical. At first, the behaviour of hack is violating morality, it is violating other people’s privacy, and the boss’s details sometimes is a trade secret. So, in the aspect of law, this is also an illegal behaviour. And another problem also could happen, such as personal bank passwords leak will face the risk of personal property stealing.

  • You are doing an initial research in area of a town where may bars and pubs are located, to estimate the level of problematic social behaviour in the area. your research is independent from the police, because you want to observe their behaviour as well. You observe both abusive and violent behaviour.

As far as I am concerned, I do not think this behaviour has some problems. Firstly, this aim of this behaviour is not negative. Just research the social behaviours. And this behaviour is not to affect any people, which means it would not lead to any privacy, social, law problems. So I think this behaviour is not about ethical.

Week 11: Peer Review

I read the WenJie’s (silver) blog, and find he is interested in artificial intelligence (AI). I learn that AI is a complex technology that needs combine multiple IT technologies. Such as machine learning, computer vision and so on. He might choose this topic as a research topic, and he looks for resources through Google Chrome. Currently, he has found some useful articles about his subject, which is very useful for him to complete his research project. He thinks his theme is a topic that can be of interest to people in the future, so I am really looking forward to his work.

Furthermore, Silver prefers to do something about AI, and he thinks AI will substitute people in the future. However, I have different viewpoints with him. So, I will pay attention to his research results. I expect him to convince me.

Week 10: Areas of possible research interest

   Areas of possible research interest

2019 S2 Project Possibilities

This will be a working document for the next few weeks

Template

1.  Broad Research/Project Interest Area

  • Short description of the area of IT that interests you (explain it to me!)

I am really interested in VR technology. When we mentioned Virtual Reality, many people will think about VR games. However, I think there are more area VR technology could be used, such as pharmacy, education areas.

  • Why is it interesting to you

When I first know about VR technology is in the game shop, a VR game is being tried for free. It is amazing and attracts me because it makes me got a sense of immersion in the virtual world.

  • Three things you know about it

The most VR technology is using in VR games.

There are still aspects about VR technology could be improved, such as expensive VR equipment cost.

Some VR technology is using in primary school education.

  • Three things you believe about it

With the development of VR technology, increasingly area will use VR technology

With the development of VR technology, VR equipment costs will dramatically reduce.

In the future, VR movies will become popular.

  • Three things you don’t know about it

How to create a virtual world by using Virtual Reality

How to avoid VR games addiction problems

How to use VR in a different area, such as in pharmacy, design.

  • Would you rather: Do something, Research it or Do both

I prefer to research it because VR technology is a new technology, there are still many issues need to improve. Therefore, I want to know these issues and do some research to find answers why Virtual Reality is worth developing.

  • Go and see if you can find a few resources about it – (post URL) forum? facebook group? linkedin group? or a good blog? Or even academic articles 🙂

You can do more than one area of interest if you can’t decide!

2. Identifying a possible project

  • Construct 10 (interesting!) questions about your topic

Identify three good questions/ideas

  1. Who will use VR technology?
  2. What areas VR technology could be used?
  3. Why people can use VR technology in primary school education?
  4. What benefits would cause when people are using VR technology in primary school education?
  5. What drawbacks would cause when people are using VR technology in primary school education?
  6. What public stances about using VR technology in primary school education
  • For each of these 3 suggest what you could do to answer/explore it.
  • Who will use VR technology?
  • What areas could VR technology be used?
  • Why people can use VR technology in primary school education?

For these three questions, I will use the questionnaire to investigate different people and obtain the results

And according to some academic websites, such as google scholar, Pro-Quest to find some resources to research it.

  • What is the fundamental goal underlying each of the 3 questions?

The essential aims for three questions are following:

  1. To identify what is the most group of people using VR technology. Then people can find how popular to using VR in primary school.
  2. To find how many people will mention the primary school education area, which could indirect to show public stance.
  3. Find advantages and disadvantages when people are using VR technology in primary school education.

3. Making a choice

  •  Why people can use VR technology in primary school education?

Title name: Using VR technology in primary school education will lead to beneficial effects.

According to investigation, I can get some answers from secondary sources. Gather all useful information then summarise what advantages could be caused by using VR technology in primary school education.

4. Ethical Issues

Developing VR technology still has some ethical issues, such as when children are using Virtual Reality, it would cause some VR game addiction problems.

5. IP (Intellectual Property) and Copyright (Creative Commons, Copyleft)

Any issues/considerations?

People should consider copyright and avoid plagiarism. And using no more than 10% the same words and sentences from other people’s essays or reports. For me, I will open part of Copyright—Creative Commons.

Week 7: Useful Blog and Interest

Useful Blog

I look through all my classmates’ blog. And I prefer to choose Dura’s blog to be the most useful blog. First of all, his blog has a clear category and have a name for each week’s blog. On the other hand, I like some answer he written, such as what is ontology and epistemology. From his blog, I still find something which I can improve. For example, I could put some reference at the bottom. When we look at this reference, we can find some of them is academic, which means this blog is believable. Read his content, and we can see that he answered all the question which we need to finish each week.

Interest

The IT area/subject I have most enjoyed is the technology of Virtual Reality.

The IT area/subject I least enjoyed is to write the professional article such as, write analyse report about program.

The IT area/subject I was most interested in is Artificial Intelligence(AI).

The one IT thing I never want to have to do again is to choose the Profession writing 601 courses.

I chose to study IT because I try to create something useful and earn money.

If I couldn’t study IT I would study management or costume designing

When I was a kid I wanted to be a boss or basketball player.

One IT thing I would like to know more about is to how to use Virtual Reality in primary education.

Week Six:Academic articles

Rice, D. (2019). The driverless car and the legal system: Hopes and fears as the courts, regulatory agencies, waymo, tesla, and uber deal with this exciting and terrifying new technology. Journal of Strategic Innovation and Sustainability, 14(1), 134-146. Retrieved from https://search-proquest-com.nmit.idm.oclc.org/docview/2209475389?accountid=40261

From abstract:

what the essay topic is?

The topic of the essay discusses that benefit people could obtain from the driverless car as well as legal problems.

what the authors/researchers did?

There are three main parts of the essay. At first, the researcher did some study of an experiment, which is let driverless car drive on the test section then collect the information and make the investigation to found that what is the main problem when for the driverless car. Secondly, according to the experiment, the researcher concluded that the requirement for autonomous test track design. Lastly, investigated the legal issues in the driverless car.

what they discovered/or created/or concluded.

A driverless car could reduce traffic accidents and make the driver safer. However, if driverless car causes some accidents during the driving process, Perhaps the driver not sole responsible person, which means the designer or programmer who made the driverless car also need to bear legal responsibility. Therefore, the legal need to be rewritten.

What seems to be the research question(s) they were trying to answer?

There are three main topic questions in the essay. Firstly, the research tries to answer that what is the main issue when are people developing the driverless car? Secondly, how to design a reasonable autonmous test track? Furthermore, with the development of the driverless car, what new legal problems could be caused?

What methods) did they use to answer the question(s)

Secondary research: Some background information about the driverless car market or application at present is collected by other researcher’s investigation. According to this secondary information and connect today’s context and make a research plan and some thinking is from the other researcher’s information.

Exploratory research:  The author used exploratory research to make some predictions and through these guesses, make an experiment to research the topic question.

Experimental Research:  In the essay, according to the experiment, the research obtains the results of what requirement should be completed when people decided to establish an autonomous test track.

How credible do you think the paper is? (hint: look at who authors are and where and when it is published also compare what they were asking with what they did)

I mostly agree with the information in this essay. I still remember in the class tutor had an investigation of reliability from diverse information sources. At first, the essay is found that from Pro-Quest, which is the academic standard. Moreover, the research and data which from the experiment are convictive. However, some results are got by exploratory Research which included some prediction, no one can accurate the future. Hence, I only suspect some aspects which are resulted by prediction.

Did you agree, or not, with what they wrote in their conclusion? Why?

I agree with the conclusion, because the conclusion which the researcher write is to connect the date and investigation from the authors mentioned above in the essay. According to the research, then obtain the conclusion, which is convincing and believable.

Briefly describe two things that you learnt from the paper.

  • I learned that one of the main reasons why people need development of the driverless car is that automatic vehicle could dramatically decrease the accidents which cause by driver’s mistakes
  • Before I read this essay, I never considered some aspects of legal. But now, I realized that driverless car not only included driver’s responsibility. The driverless designers or programmer also have a responsibility as well.

In no more than 250 of your own words (i.e. a paraphrase), describe what the paper is about

The essay illustrated that people need pay more attention to many aspects of driverless car areas. Firstly, driverless car is a new technology which has connected artificial intelligence (AI), which means it could avoid many mistakes that could be caused by people. Therefore, it could reduce many accidents. However, if a driverless car no one drives it. But it meets some accident.  apparently, the driver has no responsibility for this accident. That is the reason why some traffic laws should be rewritten. Moreover, the essay also discusses which environment should be established to design the autonomous test track, such as checking the right green light combination: prohibited greens cannot be on at the same time.

How ‘credible’: 90%

Reason:

Because it comes from google scholar which is academic research website. However, everything could wrong we need to be a rigorously suspicious scientific attitude to look at the problem. That why I do not completely believe it.

Reason:

I 60% believe this blog because although this blog is published in the blog which named ‘computing education research blog’, they do not have enough examples and evidence to provide support. What’s more, we don’t know if the writer is a professional computer researcher or just a people who interested in computer. So, I only 60% to believe it.

Week Three:Research Paradigm

As far as I am concerned, describing something as a ‘research paradigm’ means that it is an established model, accepted by a substantial number of people in a research community. Sometimes it looks like a model and it is overall conceptual frameworks within which some researchers work. What’s more, it accepted by a substantial number of people in a research community and researchers can share information with each other. And I think research paradigm include research philosophies and research methods. Only connect this two well, the research is validity. For example, when you determine your research philosophy. Then you will decide your ontology ( the view of knowledge, or what is knowledge), epistemology, (what is regarded as acceptable knowledge in a discipline), and methodology (the methodology of discovering and creating knowledge) will be clear. This will help you choose more accurate and effective research methods and collect more reliable evidence. Combined with accurate language expression, you can better answer your research questions later.

Week Two: The relevant to research between ontology and epistemology

  • What is ontology? How is it relevant to research?

Ontology is a subject of study in the philosophy that is concerned with the nature of existence. Ontology is the study of the existence of things, so the true connotation of ontology is the objective description of the real existence in any field in the world. Nowadays, ontology has important relevant to research. For example, in the IT research field. Functionally, ontology and data can be somewhat similar, but ontology is more knowledge-rich than database expression. The ontology provides a rigorous and rich theory of the field, not just a structure for storing data.

  • What is epistemology? How is it relevant to research?

I think epistemology the individual’s view of knowledge, the individual’s belief in the acquisition of knowledge which including belief about the structure of knowledge and the nature of knowledge, beliefs about sources of knowledge and the beliefs of these beliefs in individual knowledge. Adjustment and influence of construction and knowledge acquisition process.

In the research, if we use epistemology in it. People’s understanding will develop, from the sensibility to rationality, from the subjective to objective, see the essence through phenomena and look beyond the surface, which is important in the research.

  • What is the connection between ontology and epistemology in a research context?

Ontology starts from things, things themselves. The origin of the things. However, the object of the epistemology is people. These two theories are the basis of research. During the research, at first, the researcher should clear the goal. This is ontology. Then we need to collect the information and knowledge about it. that is epistemology. Because these two theories are unified. Therefore, ontology determines epistemology, epistemology reflects the corresponding ontology. What kind of ontology you have what kind of epistemology you will get.

Week Two: true or false, objective or subjective , reality or illusion

  1. Is there a difference between ‘knowing’ something and ‘having knowledge’ of something?

Knowing is like you understand something, a clear and certain mental apprehension. Having knowledge means you have already learned something. You know something not means you learn it. just you can recognize it but not your own. However, having knowledge means you try to master this knowledge or skill.

  • What is ‘truth’?

Truth means a fact that has been verified

Just like earth is a sphere, the earth turns around the sun

  • What do we really mean when we say something is ‘true’?

That depends, sometimes when we talk or discuss something, we say that true, that means I agree with your idea or viewpoint. When we in an exam, true maybe means the answer is correct.

  • Is there a difference between knowing something is ‘true’ and believing that something is ‘true’?

There is a difference between those two. Knowing something is true is more objective, such as you have evidence or some people have verified it. However, believe is more subjective and according to personal emotion and feeling. Maybe something is wrong but any people could still believe it.

  • What is the difference between subjective and objective ‘truth’?

Objective truth comes from evidence, people already verify it and not influenced by personal feelings or opinions, considering only facts.

Subjective truth is based on your own ideas or opinions rather than facts and therefore sometimes unfair, which means sometimes, subjective truth is not really truth may be false.

  • What is a ‘fact’ and can ‘facts’ change?

Fact is a piece of information which is known to be true. Therefore, the fact is something which has already happened. That means we cannot change it.  whatever it is a good fact or bed fact. But people could be changed by facts. We can change ourselves and to get a good fact.

  • How do we discover if something is ‘true’ or not?

First of all, we should use objective thinking and try to find evidence to prove it’s true or false. Additionally, we should research and collect information about it. In contemporary society, people have a rule to define somethings is true or false such as depend on the law.

  • “We do not see things as they are but as we are” Anais Nin. What does this mean?

It means sometimes we judge something to depend on our subjective thinking. It is not the real truth, it just what our thinking about it.

  • “Reality is an illusion, albeit a very persistent one “Einstein. What does this mean?

Illusion means an idea or opinion that is wrong, especially about yourself. Reality means what actually happens or is true, not what is imagined or thought. However, some people defaulted that only seeing is reality. We use eyes to watch something and have images in our brain. If people have doubts about the authenticity of the things they see,and think that is an illusion. That everything will become an illusion

  1. Is there a difference between ‘true’ and ‘valid’? Explain!

True means real or exact. Based on facets and not imagined or invented. Valid means that is legally or officially acceptable. Closer to the legal level. But ‘true’ is to define a thing which is true or false. Everyone has their own opinion, which means some people could believe that is true, some people disagree with it. however, it cannot happen in ‘valid’ because people need to check the evidence or legal to ensure that is valid. Therefore, valid more objective. Some time true more subjective.
